  1. Thank you for this. When I read this novel I didn’t pay the attention to Smerdyakov that he seems to deserve. Dostoevsky takes him seriously, and there something tragic about him. As you say his transformation was toward the bad, but at the very end he’s reading a book of religious teachings when Ivan comes to see him for the last time. Perhaps a small sign of some small change toward the good.
